Hi Everyone,
I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy Autumn swimming. The drop in air temperature while the water temperatures stay warm, at least for awhile, is very pleasant. The clarity of the sea also starts to improve, heralding the lead up winter swimming, my absolute favourite. This is when you can see so much more in the water with visibility becoming crystal clear over the next few months. The marine life is amazing at this time of year! If you’ve not tried ocean swimming yet, now is the time to embark on your open water journey while the temperatures are pleasant, so you adjust before winter. Diana takes our Open Water Program for Total Beginners at North Bondi Beach on alternate fortnights. The details are below.
It’s exciting to see the return of so many ocean swims this season. I know a number of Sydney Swimmers have been in a few events already, and many are signing up to the Balmoral Swim for Cancer, or the Coogee Island swim, both running on the same day in April. If you’re keen to sign up for the Balmoral Swim for Cancer let me know as we’ve set up a WhatsApp chat so we can look at forming teams, once we know who has entered. This swim offers a 5km, 2.5km and 1km distance, so there’s something for everyone.
I’m thrilled so many of you are setting your sights on some iconic and challenging swims; the South Head Roughwater, Head 2 Head swim, Waikiki Roughwater, Lake Windermere, Ullswater, along with the swims already mentioned. No doubt there will be more to add to the list. There really is nothing like a big, hairy swim goal to motivate you to keep your training up. For those keen to share information and experiences about these swims and others, please enter the details in the WhatsApp group chat to share with our swimmers. You never know, others maybe keen to join you. If you’re not in the Sydney Swimmers WhatsApp group, there is a link below.
A huge shout out to Lisa who swims with us weekday mornings, Wednesday nights, and Saturday mornings. She has registered for a number of swim events at the World Transplant Games to be held in April in Perth this year. Such a great event for transplant recipients across a range of disciplines. A celebration of a second chance at life! Lisa has competed in the both swimming and the skiing previously and is training very hard with her sights firmly set on a podium finish. The Sydney Swimmers squad is right behind you, Lisa! Cheering you on all the way.
I can’t believe this is our first newsletter of 2023! It just highlights how busy we’ve been, with so many people wanting to get back into the water. I suspect the number of events returning post Covid-19, coupled with the warm weather has led to this spike in enquiries. I have been contacted by many swimmers considering squad training and technique improvement as part of their triathlon, or event preparation. Fingers crossed it continues. Although, I won’t leave it so long to write to you. Promise!
As always, yours in swimming,
