It’s marvellous to see everyone returning back to squad training after the holiday period. The Victoria Park Pool swimmers are certainly keen to be back as you can see from the picture above.

There are a few Sydney Swimmers with some big goals in the coming months, Lizzie and Grant are off to swim the Rottnest Channel, Michael the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim and the rest of us are just hoping to get our fitness back as soon as possible after the Festive Season. I wish Lizzie, Grant and Michael all the very best with their upcoming swimming adventures. If you have a swimming goal, please remember to it with your coaches, so we can assist you with your training.

There were at least seven Sydney Swimmers who swam in the Big Swim (Palm Beach to Whale) on Australia Day. This is one of my favourite swims, and although not super regular, I have swum it three times and enjoyed each one. This year I heard it was a bit bumpy, so well done to all our swimmers. There’s a great photo further down in the newsletter of three from the Drummoyne squad who claim they “survived” the swim. I think they did far better than that!

Some of you may be aware we’ve encountered a few challenges around our lane hire arrangements for our Learn to Swim programs in the City of Sydney pools. We are working with Belgravia Leisure and the City of Sydney to find a solution. At this point the squad training sessions at Victoria Park Pool and Prince Alfred Park will not be impacted and will continue as per normal.

We’ve had one or two questions from those in our Learn to Swim program about swimming in public pools and the Novel Coronavirus. I thought I’d share some information in the newsletter below, as it may answer any niggling questions you might have.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome back Coach Christina. She has been away on what looked like the most amazing trip to Canada, the Galapagos Islands, Chile, Argentina, and Rapa Nui. If you’ve followed her blog you would have learned a bit about her adventures! Like many, I look forward to hearing all the stories.

A huge thank you to Coach Charm for all her great sessions on Tuesday mornings at Victoria Park for the month of January. These sessions will now be coached by Christina in the main, supported by Paul and others.

Finally, we celebrated our fifth birthday on the 29th January. A huge milestone for a small business. I thank you for all your support over the years and I hope you’ve had as much fun as the team and I have!

As always, yours in swimming,

Kari Baynes
